The Grammarian and the Sailor

with one comment

An arrogant linguist boarded a ship. He asked the sailor, “O sailor, do you know any grammar?” When the other replied in the negative, he said with contempt, “What a pity-you have spent half of your life in vain.” This made the sailor sad, but he kept quiet. After a while, a terrible storm broke out and the ship began to sink. The sailor asked the now-frantic linguist, “O grammarian, do you know how to swim?” This time, the linguist replied in the negative. Then the sailor said “What a pity – for it means that you will lose your entire life!”
